We have a lot of incredible people teaching for our programs, and while our students get to work with them every week, we know that our wider community might not know them!
Our featured teacher for November, Bokyung Byun, is new to our programs this year. We are so thrilled to welcome Bo to the Elemental Guitar family, and to have her share her artistry and expertise with our students.
EM: How did you get started playing your instrument?
BB: I saw guitarists performing on TV. I was so intrigued by the instrument that i asked my mom to take me to a guitar teacher! I also played piano briefly before learning guitar.
EM: What do you love about teaching guitar in an ensemble rather than just through private lessons?
BB: I find that in an ensemble class, students benefit from working as a team, encouraging each other to constantly improve.
EM: What is one of your favorite musical memories?
BB: I used to be in a recorder orchestra in my elementary school. I have the memory of rehearsing with my friends after school. Making music with friends was so much fun, and I was mesmerized by how all of the different parts come together to form harmony and counterpoint.
EM: If you could give our students one piece of advice, musical or otherwise, what would it be?
BB: Learning a new musical instrument is like learning how to speak a new language. It can get frustrating at times in the beginning, but before you know it, you will be a natural…so keep up the good work!
EM: What do you like to do when you’re not playing music or teaching?
BB: I like tasting different food. LA has an unlimited number of unique restaurants to offer, and i love trying out a new restaurant every week!
