The Power of Prelude

Elemental Music parent Elise Toren wrote a beautiful letter about the impact that Prelude, our program for beginning string players, has made on her family.

Four years ago I came across a video of one of my son’s classmates playing a violin with a comment something to the effect of “And so it begins.” I reached out to inquire and that was the first time I’d heard of Elemental Music. I wasn’t familiar with Elemental Music, but looking back now I am so thankful that I asked! Our son already had a packed extracurricular schedule, but I’d recently read an article about the benefits of children learning a musical instrument. I felt like music was something he needed in his life.

I reached out via email to ask questions about the Prelude Program specifically. “What instrument should he start with? He’s never played any instrument, will he burn out?” All my questions were answered thoroughly and confidently. Within two days our son was registered, his instrument was rented, and we were attending an Elemental Music welcome picnic.

Our son started in Prelude four years ago, playing the violin, and our daughter has just completed her first year of Prelude, playing the viola. The outstanding instruction, fun musical games, social interaction, and dedicated staff have helped both our son and daughter find themselves through music.

The Elemental Music programs not only taught our children how to play their instruments, but it has also taught them to persevere and work through challenges. It has helped them learn responsibility, boosted their confidence and self-esteem. And it has instilled a love of music in them that they will carry throughout their lives.

They wake up every morning and immediately start the day streaming the local classical music radio station, KUSC. For fun they talk about composers and music theory. They are fully immersed in the world of classical music.

It is incredible to witness and we owe it all to Elemental Music.

Many of our Prelude students follow a similar path. While they may start off in the program with no prior experience, many students develop a passion and excitement for music that carries them into middle school and beyond!
