Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month? Elemental Music would not be the same without the many passionate volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to support our young musicians and our programs. This month, we’re celebrating by spotlighting some of the parents and community members who volunteer for Elemental Music and help to make our programs possible!

Today, we’re featuring Rich Capparela. Rich has supported Elemental Music many times over the years, most often in a hosting capacity. His commentary and humor have delighted our audiences at events across Santa Monica and we’re grateful to Rich for volunteering his time and efforts to support the many young musicians in our programs. Read his volunteer story below!

Elemental Music: Tell us how you first got involved with Elemental Music.

Rich Capparela: I'd had a long and productive relationship with a former President of the Elemental Music board - my wife Marcia.

EM: What are your activities as a volunteer?

RC: I've hosted a concert or two at venues like Santa Monica Place. Most recently I hosted Elemental Music’s Zoom bingo - loads of fun.

EM: What inspired you to volunteer with us and what motivates you to stay involved after all of these years?

RC: Without music there is nothing. I've spent my entire adult life trying to pass along my unflagging passion for music. Elemental Music does the same with its mission.  A creative art form can show someone the path to their soul. For some that path is through the visual arts or literature.  For some, the path is lit through sound.

EM: In your opinion, what is the most important work that Elemental Music does?

RC: Making music available to all. I came from a downwardly mobile non-musical home and it was only through a few dedicated educators that I was exposed to music. Regardless of one's family's yearly income or zip code, the next Bernstein or Hilary Hahn is there someplace. Elemental Music could just be the spark for that youngster.

EM: What do you do when you aren't volunteering with Elemental Music?

RC: I talk on the radio at KUSC-FM, create radio spots for the Chicago Symphony and give pre-concert lectures around town.

EM: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

RC: This New Yorker cartoon sums up things pretty well:
